Behaviour Support Practitioner

Behaviour Support and Capacity Building involves partnering with clients and their support networks to comprehensively understand their strengths, requirements, and NDIS objectives. Our services extend to children, adolescents, and adults, offering Behavior Support and Capacity Building. For individuals across all age groups, we are equipped to deliver Positive Behavior Support Plans as a component of our behaviour support program.

During our sessions we use person-centred and evidence-based interventions that address the underlying causes of challenging behaviour or behaviours of concern.

We provide therapeutic counselling, training and education to clients and those in their support networks. We believe that by assisting and upskilling those around the client, we can enhance the effectiveness of behavioural supports.

By working with and observing clients in their environments, we identify risks and triggers. We work with support people to ensure that the environment is conducive to the client’s success.

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a strategy based on applied behavior analysis that aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with challenging behaviors by understanding the reasons behind these behaviours and addressing them.

Key aspects include:

1. Person-Centered Approach: Tailoring strategies to the individual's needs and preferences.
2. Understanding Behaviours: Identifying the purpose behind challenging behaviors through functional assessment.
3. Environmental Adjustments: Modifying triggers in the environment to reduce challenging behaviours.
4. Skill Building: Teaching new, socially acceptable skills that fulfill the same needs as the challenging behaviors.
5. Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging positive behavior through rewards.
6. Preventive Strategies: Using proactive measures to prevent challenging behaviors.
7. Inclusive Practices: Supporting participation in chosen activities and community engagement.
8. Team Collaboration: Involving the individual, their support network, and professionals in planning and implementation.
9. Ethical Consideration and Respect: Prioritizing the individual's dignity, independence, and self-determination.

PBS is applied across various settings, including schools and residential facilities, to support individuals with diverse needs effectively.

Behaviours of concern are actions that might not be safe. For example, if a person hurts someone.
Positive behaviour support means changing things to help a person feel better.

For example:

Do things a person likes

Go to places a person likes

Stop things a person does not like.
